The 36th NAACP Image Awards recognized the very best in movies, television, music and books by and about people of color again this year, recognizing across the board hit Ray and actors Morgan Freeman and Taye Diggs, among others.
“This has been an absolute wonderful ride,” said actor/comedian Jamie Foxx, who seemed genuinely humbled in the presence of presenters Sidney Poitier and Diahann Carroll. Foxx added his best actor award to the handful he already holds for his portrayal of Ray Charles. Ray picked up four awards, including outstanding motion picture.
Freeman, who was not at the ceremony, won the award for outstanding supporting actor for his performance in Million Dollar Baby.
For the first time, the NAACP bestowed an award to an outstanding independent or foreign film. Woman Thou Art Loosed producer Reuben Cannon accepted the honor for the film based on the novel by Bishop T.D. Jakes.
American Idol winner Fantasia was named outstanding female artist after performing an inspirational musical with Stevie Wonder and Yolanda Adams. Other musical winners included Usher (best male artist), Kanye West (best new artist) and Prince (outstanding album), who also received the prestigious Vanguard Award.
Special honorees included Sen. Barack Obama, D-Il, who received the Chairman’s Award and Oprah Winfrey, who was induced into the NAACP Hall of Fame.
Kevin Hill’sTaye Diggs won the outstanding actor in a drama series award, while Third Watch’s Nia Long was named best drama actress. Other television awardees included Bernie Mac and Mo’Nique.
Hosted by Chris Tucker, this year’s ceremony will air tomorrow (March 25) at 8 p.m. on Fox.
