Jermell Rainer Jr. won first place Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Poster Contest responding to the theme “Let Us Not Wallow In The Valley Of Despair.” He was selected by the judging committee at the Unity Lutheran Church, after competing against many area Lutheran school middle grade students.
Rainer was honored at the 2nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast hosted by Pastor Willie Stallworth. He was supported at this event in large numbers by his proud parents (Yolonda Yancie and Jermell Rainer Sr.), his school (St. Matthews Lutheran School), his Pastor Johnathon Lewis, his teacher Christopher Tomlin and his classmate Nandi, who won second place in the poster contest.
His winning poster focused on “who we are in the African-American community”
because of people like Dr. King and the youth’s great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Carothers Sr. His elders tell the story of how they left a little town named Dermott, Arkansas to move to St. Louis to provide a better life for their family.
