Bank-On Save-Up St. Louis has pledged to open 20,000 checking and savings accounts for St. Louis residents in the St. Louis area by 2015. The initiative is led by the St. Louis Regional Unbanked Task Force , which includes 18 financial institutions representing 115 branch locations as well as 40 community partners.
According to a report by the FDIC in 2011, 9.7 percent of households in the St. Louis metro area are unbanked and 20.1 percent are under-banked. African Americans comprise 33.9 percent of those unbanked in this region, making St. Louis the third highest city in the nation for unbanked African Americans.
