Several schools in the Hazelwood School District recently participated in the Hour of Code, a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to show that anybody can learn the basics of computer science. The program is a global movement that reaches students in 180 plus countries. Steven Cook, Walker Elementary library specialist, took his first through fifth-grade classes to the computer lab to participate.

“Every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science and take part in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics activities,” said Cook. “It helps to develop problem-solving skills, logic, and creativity.”

To participate in the Hour of Code, no experience is needed. All coding activities are self-guided, and the lessons are for every age and experience level. During the hour, students coded several programs on their own using their district-Issued Chromebooks.

The Hour of Code is organized by Code.org, a public non-profit dedicated to expanding participation in computer science by making it available in schools, and increasing participation by women and underrepresented students of color.
