Rapper Doug E. Fresh to perform Friday

“Caribbean Nights,” at the Anheuser-Busch Tour Center Friday, June 17, will benefit the United Way of Greater St. Louis’s Charmaine Chapman Society, the St. Louis region’s premier leadership giving initiative for African Americans.

“Raising funds and doing good work can be exciting and absolute fun,” said Minga Furr, president and chief executive officer of Equity Development, LLC, who co-chairs the 2005 Charmaine Chapman Society with her husband, Johnny Furr Jr., vice president, Sales Development and Community Affairs at Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc.

“People who come out on June 17 will certainly find this out and hopefully join the Society.”

Guests will be asked to wear Caribbean white attire to help enhance the island theme. Guests will enjoy international musical talents like Doug E. Fresh, “the first human beatbox in the rap world,” and the Anita Jackson Band. They will also be treated to island delicacies.

With the help of hosts Fred Finley and Harry Michel, co-owners of Seven, and Tammie Holland, Magic 104.9 on-air personality and director of Community Affairs for UPN-46, emerging leaders in the community are stepping up to lend support to helping others through the United Way.

“Of course, the whole purpose of the Chapman Society and this event is to help thousands of people in our region,” Johnny Furr said.

“United Way is dedicated to strengthening families, investing in children, helping the elderly and building safer communities.”

Charmaine Chapman Society members contribute $1,000 or more annually to the United Way campaign. This year’s Chapman Society effort kicked off May 13 and has raised $250,000 to-date. The Charmaine Chapman Society is part of United Way’s overall annual fund-raising campaign.

“African Americans know what it means to help each other,” said Johnny Furr.

“Minga and I ask that people help us to continue that strong tradition in the African-American community. Becoming a member of the Charmaine Chapman Society is one of the best ways we know of to do this.”

Those making leadership pledges this year will have a chance to win great incentives that include a seven-day cruise with the Tom Joyner Morning Show in 2006.

Charmaine Chapman Society members and one guest per member will receive free admission to “Caribbean Nights.” The cost for non-members is $50 per person. To make reservations or for more information, please call (314) 539-4113 or e-mail ccs@stl.unitedway.org.
