Two companies with large investments in the St. Louis region are among the Top 10 companies for African Americans, according to DiversityInc.

Wachovia, which recently purchased and merged with St. Louis-based A.G. Edwards, and Macy’s are among the top firms.

No. 1: Turner Broadcasting System – 22 percent of its work force, 28 percent of all new hires were black.

No. 2: Darden Restaurants – Chairman and CEO Clarence Otis Jr. is one of five black CEOs in Fortune 500 companies. One-third of Darden’s board of directors is black, compared with a national average of 8 percent.

No. 3: McDonald’s – The fast-food chain spent more than 40 percent of its procurement with minority-owned businesses. Blacks were 20 percent of its work force, 28 percent of its new hires.

No. 4: Wachovia – 21 percent of its work force, 31 percent of new hires were black. Fifteen percent of managers are black, 19 percent of management promotions went to blacks.

No. 5: Bright Horizons Family Solutions – 21 percent of its work force and 23 percent of new hires were black.

No. 6: Macy’s – 20 percent of its work force and 23 percent of new hires were black.

No. 7: General Motors – 13.5 percent of management promotions went to blacks.

No. 8: Kaiser Permanente – Its board of directors is 21 percent black; spends almost 6 percent of procurement budget with minority-owned businesses.

No. 9: Sodexo – 26 percent of its work force and 28 percent of new hires were black.

No. 10: Cox Communications – 15 percent of its managers are black and 16 percent of its management promotions went to blacks.
