Tax help throughout February

Every year, many people fail to report their taxable earnings to the state and federal governments, some due to financial challenges. Failure to file taxes can lead to the taxpayer becoming penalized by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) – or simply not getting all the money back from the government to which they are entitled.

United Way (with a host of community partners) and People’s Health Centers are each sponsoring free electronic filing sessions, when citizens can handle this responsibility at no cost.

Your household income must have been $38,300 or less in 2006 to qualify for the United Way service. To learn if you qualify, call the United Way’s Information and Referral line at (800) 427-4626 or (314) 421-INFO (4636). Those sessions and sites are:

In order to have your taxes prepared for free by the United Way, you will need to bring:

* All W-2’s and 1099’s (if any)

* Social Security Card(s) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number(s) – ITIN – for all family members

* Valid picture ID for taxpayer and spouse (driver’s license or state ID or passport)

* Copy of your 2005 tax return

* Proof of unemployment compensation (if valid)

* Copy of a voided check or bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit

* Proof of child care expenses (if valid)

* Amount of advanced Earned Income Tax Credit payment

* If married, must file jointly and both spouses must be present to sign paperwork.

Free tax help Feb. 8

In honor of Black History Month, People’s Health Centers (PHC) will host a day of Free Electronic Filing Income Tax Service on Thursday, February 8, from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. at People’s Health Centers, 5701 Delmar Blvd. Certified Public Accountants (CPA) will be on-site to provide free tax services electronically.

You will need to bring the same documents and individuals listed above.

There are certain tax returns that will not be able to be prepared, such as business tax returns, rental property, and self-employment income from a trade or business requiring a Schedule C.
