Harris-Stowe State University is has submitted its one-time wish list to the state and federal government for assistance through the economic stimulus package. With education being a key component of President Obama’s stimulus package, Harris-Stowe is seeking to complete major renovations on its campus to better serve its growing student population.

Those requests include the restoration of the former Vashon Community Center. Once tuck-pointed and renovated, the center would serve as a multipurpose facility that woould house the university’s multimillion dollar jazz collection and memorabilia; a repository of historic documents for research; classrooms for academic programs; an art studio, as well as a professional development center for homeland security. The university also has plans for a Homeland Security Emergency Management Project, which will call for the development of a new degree program in this area.

In addition, Harris-Stowe has requested a portion of the stimulus money to be used for a library and technology center for its Anheuser-Busch School of Business Administration; upgrades for the university’s five science labs; building maintenance on its more than 100-year-old administration building; replacement of the current information technology infrastructure; and retirement of long-term debt on a recent Energy Savings Program.
