U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson joined St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay at City Hall on Tuesday to announce a grant that will fund a wide range of activities that help to build, buy, and rehabilitate affordable housing for rent or homeownership, and will provide direct rental assistance to low-income people.

Jackson, a former City public safety director and St. Louis Housing Authority chief, announced that $1.75 billion in HUD funds will be used to build affordable housing units and help first-time homeowners with down-payment and closing costs. St. Louis will receive more than $4.2 million.
