Ernest J. Gaines was awarded the 2012 National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama. His novels include The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, Catherine Carmier, Of Love and Dust, In My Father’s House, A Gathering of Old Men and A Lesson Before Dying, for which he received the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1994.
