Last week Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan introduced the Missouri Investor Protection Center, a comprehensive resource for Missourians to get helpful advice about investing their money and avoiding fraud.

In Carnahan’s time in office, the Securities Division has recovered over $9 million for Missouri investors. However, with the proper tools and resources, these Missourians might have been able to help stop a scam before it started, and the new online Missouri Investor Protection center is a way to help keep the public informed.

The Missouri Investor Protection Center’s website, available at www.MissouriSafeSavings.com, offers resources that include investor education publications, a savings calculator, answers to frequently asked questions, and a calendar of upcoming investor education events.

“This website puts investor education materials at people’s fingertips,” said Carnahan.

“With nearly 6 million Missourians impacted by investments and retirement savings, the Missouri Investor Protection Center provides resources for those who want to learn about looking after their savings.”

A key part of the Investor Protection Center is the Senior Investor Protection Unit, comprised of staff members from Carnahan’s Securities Division dedicated to educating and protecting Missouri’s senior investors.

In 2007, the Senior Investor Protection Unit investigated nearly 30 “free lunch” seminars across the state and gathered information about these seminars’ growing prevalence as well as things to look out for. To view the full report and its findings, visit www.MissouriSafeSavings.com.

“Senior investment fraud has been recognized nationwide as a top threat to investors, and Missouri is no exception,” said Carnahan. “We created the Senior Investor Protection Unit to combat fraudulent and abusive tactics that are used to prey on seniors and retirees.”

In addition, the website also features public awareness materials such as press releases, investor alerts and investor awareness columns. Visit www.MissouriSafeSavings.com.
