Global Communicator profiles media moguls

The African-American Public Relations Collective (AAPRC), a national network of more than 1,000 communications professionals, will release the September issue of its primary e-publication, Global Communicator— formerly the AAPRC Monthly — on September 26.

This issue looks at four sides of the entertainment industry with feature stories on media owner Cathy Hughes, brand architect Marvet Britto, media personality Wendy Williams, and entertainment industry journalist Brett Pulley. Though each of these highly successful professionals view the entertainment industry from a different vantage point, they all have passion, drive, vision, and staying power — and their careers all suggest that to be successful in the business today you have to be able to perform your craft across different media platforms.

Cathy Hughes is founder and chairperson of Radio One, the nation’s seventh largest broadcasting company and the largest radio broadcasting company that primarily targets African-Americans and urban listeners. Hughes’ company, which just celebrated its 25th anniversary, recently ventured into television with the launched of TV One on cable and satellite. The company also has expanded into satellite radio, film, and the production and distribution of original programming. Hughes talks with Global Communicator about her pioneering career in media and about the things she still hopes to do with the company as well as with some personal projects.

Global Communicator also talks with Marvet Britto, whose twelve-year-old agency has shaped the images and careers of a long list of popular artists in music, television, film, sports, corporate and the fashion industries. Over the years, her clients have included Mariah Carey, Kim Cattrall, Lee Daniels, Angela Bassett, Courtney B. Vance, and Star Jones, among many others. Britto’s own story is as compelling as the ones she tells about her clients. She discusses her vision and philosophy about work, faith, and the true meaning of success.

Global Communicator goes one-on-one with Wendy Williams about her twenty-year reign as the “Queen of Radio.” She discusses her unique and sometimes controversial style that’s earning her top ratings in New York and new listeners around the country — currently seven million listeners in ten cities are tuning in. She also discusses her book projects, including her new series of novels, and her television and marketing ventures. She reveals in the interview that despite her public persona as a “diva,” she’s really a home-body who enjoys a suburban life with her husband and son.

Finally, Global Communicator talks to Brett Pulley, a senior editor at Forbes magazine, covering the media and entertainment industries, and the author of The Billion Dollar BET: Robert Johnson and the Inside Story of Black Entertainment Television. He shares his views on future trends in the industry, opportunities for African-Americans for media ownership, and what it takes to be a success in the business. He also previews his next book, which looks at the growing influence of the hip-hop culture.

“These four individuals are all bringing innovation and insight to the media and entertainment industries,” said Gwendolyn Quinn, president of New York City-based GQ Media & Public Relations and publisher of the Global Communicator. “Their stories are compelling and their advice is sage. Readers will not only learn more about the individuals and the industry, they’ll learn what it takes to be successful in work and, more importantly, in life.”

Global Communicator regularly features stories that spotlight the AAPRC’s 1,000+ members — PR executives and communications specialists around the country — as well as journalists and marketing and media executives. The Global Communicator is distributed via list-serve to members, who are able to download the e-publication as a PDF.
