Known to their teachers and peers as the “dynamic duo,” Northwest Academy of Law graduates Deionna and Dewonna Ferguson have been chosen as the second class of scholars for Ava’s Grace Scholarship Foundation.

This one-of-a-kind program provides scholarships for higher education to children in Missouri who have or have had an incarcerated parent.

“They are just an amazing duo,” says Valerie Carter-Thomas, the principal at Northwest Academy of Law. “We all call them the ‘dynamic duo’ because they challenge each other to be better. They set the standard and are role models for other students.”

Both sisters were recognized as 2013 SLPS Scholar Athletes for volleyball. They were members of the St. Louis Internship Program (SLIP) and the National Honor Society, and participated in College Summit. They also volunteer at Agape Food Pantry.

The Fergusons will attend Saint Louis University in the fall. Deionna plans to study law and has participated in the Urban Debate League, Mound City Bar Association and Youth in Government. Dewonna plans to study biochemistry in order to become a doctor. She has completed internships at St. Luke’s Hospital and St. Louis Connect Care.

The second-annual Ava’s Grace Scholarship Foundation Awards Ceremony was held today, Saturday, June 8, in the Sinquefield State room at Saint Louis University. Judge Jimmie M. Edwards of 22nd Judicial Circuit Court of Missouri and founder of Innovative Concept Academy, was the keynote speaker.
