Beth Hankamer, Razon Kindell, Gloria Meek and Amy Mullins pursue degrees

Summer was brighter for four BJC HealthCare employees who were the most recent recipients of nursing scholarships from BJC: Beth Hankamer, St. Louis Children’s Hospital; Razon Kindell and Gloria Meek, Barnes-Jewish Hospital; and Amy Mullins, Parkland Health Center.

Meek is enrolled in the nursing program at Barnes-Jewish College of Nursing and Allied Health.

“Scholarships are available as long as you investigate the resources that are made available to you. I started nursing at the age of 40, and I feel blessed to have this opportunity,” Meek said.

“Employees of BJC are fortunate to have a Total Rewards program that make investments in its employees. Tuition reimbursement and scholarship opportunities are two of the many ways BJC cares about the future. It makes the giving back easy.”

Mullins, an RN and patient educator, is enrolled in a master’s of science in nursing program at Southeast Missouri State University and intends to become a family nurse practitioner.

She was excited to hear about the scholarship opportunity and even more so when she was selected as a recipient.

“Education is a wonderful opportunity to refresh your mind and grow,” says Mullins. “I am frequently amazed at the thought that every class I finish, I wonder how I ever got this far without that knowledge.”

While education is important to her, she says this scholarship is a reflection on the importance of education to BJC. “This shows the confidence my company and employers have in me,” says Mullins. “I think educational backing is the boldest statement an employer can make.”

The nursing scholarship program was established in 2004. Each scholarship provides up to $5,000 annually for tuition, fees and books for employees pursuing their bachelor’s or master’s degree in nursing.
