Edward L. and Rhelda Marbry Morgan leave legacy at SLU

Two Saint Louis University students have received assistance in purchasing textbooks and supplies, thanks to a book fund established in honor of a former university doctoral student.
Laryta Norals and Aroloye Numbere are both in their first year of doctoral studies in English and biology, respectively.
These students have been selected to receive funding for books and supplies from the Edward L. and Rhelda Marbry Morgan, Ph.D. Endowed Book Fund at Saint Louis University.
With his daughter Tawanna, Edward Morgan established the fund in honor of his late wife who, at the time of her death, was completing her dissertation in American studies at Saint Louis University. This year marks the thirteenth anniversary of the fund, which provides textbooks and supplies for graduate students at Saint Louis University.
This year’s awardees will each receive $800 to help them purchase books and supplies. As part of the application process, the students compose an essay expressing the type of person they believe Rhelda Morgan was, as well as articulating their commitment to her ideals and values.
A resume reflecting their leadership in promoting diversity and service to school, church, and/or community must accompany the essay.
Rhelda Morgan taught in the St. Louis public schools for 24 years. She also held an adjunct appointment at Harris Stowe State College, where she earned her bachelor’s degree. She was a mentor to students studying to become teachers and supervised the classroom experience of trainees from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Principia College.
A devout Christian, Morgan volunteered in her church in many capacities and served as a counselor for the Hugh O’Brian Youth Foundation.
Through the Edward L. and Rhelda Marbry Morgan, Ph.D. Endowed Book Fund, Rhelda Morgan’s legacy of scholarship, teaching, and mentoring lives on.

Census Bureau hiring for 2010
The U.S. Census Bureau will hire about a thousand people in the St Louis area between now and next spring. This strong economic shot in the arm is like having several factories open up in St Louis. Up to a total of approximately 1,000 people will be on staff during peak times.
“This is the largest civilian mobilization of workers in the history of the United States” said Dennis Johnson, regional director.
These are good paying, temporary jobs for the field positions of Recruiting Assistants, Crew Leaders, Crew Leader Assistants, Census Takers and Census Clerks. Amount of pay depends on position and location. Work related mileage is reimbursed. There may be some opportunities for advancement.
