More than 4,000 job seekers flocked to Congressman Wm. Lacy Clay’s 4th Annual First District Career Fair at Harris-Stowe State University last week. This year’s version of Career Fair was presented in partnership with Congressmen Russ Carnahan (D-MO).
Job seekers were able to meet with over 100 top St. Louis employers, including: the Boeing Company; GKN Aerospace; Ameren; BJC Healthcare Systems; Best Buy; Office Depot; Lumiere Place; Harrah’s; Ameristar; the U.S. Census Bureau; UPS; the St. Louis Public Library; and the FBI.
“The number of high-quality, exceptionally experienced workers was just incredible, and so was the community response,” said Congressman Clay. “We’ve already received reports from multiple vendors of how pleased they were to meet so many talented potential employees at one time. Our attendees this year had great skills, great attitudes and they were ready to go to work.”
For the second consecutive year, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management joined the Career Fair lineup by providing a one-stop shop for interested job seekers to learn about, and apply for, over 100,000 federal jobs, worldwide. OPM officials also conducted special break-out sessions on federal employment opportunities.
”Unemployment and underemployment are always huge issues in the First Congressional District, and this year the need for quality jobs is even more urgent,” Clay said.
“I want to thank Congressman Carnahan for his help, and I especially want to thank Dr. Henry Givens and the staff of Harris-Stowe State University for all their help and support in producing this great event.”
College campus tours
The Hazelwood East High School Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is organizing a two-day bus tour of six colleges and universities from June 18 through June 19. All district high school students are welcome to join the tour.
Participating students and chaperones will visit Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Southeast Missouri State University, Murray State University, Berea College, Eastern Kentucky University and Kentucky State University.
The cost is $80 per student based on quad-occupancy and $90 per student based on triple-occupancy. Chaperones are asked to pay $25, as well as complete the district’s volunteer approval process. Seats will be reserved first-come, first-serve with a complete registration form and a $25 deposit.
Students and chaperones who do not attend Hazelwood East High are asked to pay an additional $12 for the tour.
