Deniece Chatman and Brittney Shepard prepare for business careers

Special to the American

The St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission (CVC) has extended internships to Clyde C. Miller Career Academy students Deniece Chatman and Brittney Shepard.

Chatman is a senior at Clyde C. Miller Career Academy and wants to pursue a career in event planning. She is the Missouri vice president for SkillsUSA, a member of College Bound St. Louis and Junior Achievement, plus a captain of The Lady Phoenix soccer team.

Chatman selected the hospitality curriculum at Clyde C. Miller due to the varied opportunities in the different segments of the industry. “The CVC internship benefits my future career because it is first-hand industry experience within a successful organization,” said Chatman.

Upon graduation from the academy, Chatman will attend Southeast Missouri State University to study business marketing and management.

Brittney Shepard is also a senior at the academy and taking the hospitality pathway. She aspires to become an entrepreneur and open her own Day Spa & Salon. She is involved in College Summit and performs volunteer work within the St. Louis community.

“I have an opportunity to build upon essential skills,” she said. “What I learn today will one day help me achieve my personal goal of becoming part of the St. Louis business community.”

After graduation, Shepard begins her studies in entrepreneurship at Harris-Stowe State University.

“The interns have been with the CVC for a couple of weeks and quickly acclimated to our business environment,” said Leo Ming, CVC vice president of Human Resources.

“Brittany and Deniece will cycle through multiple departments from human resources on our facilities side to convention sales on the marketing. When Brittany and Deniece leave they will have solid organizational knowledge.”

The St. Louis CVC is the official destination marketing organization for St. Louis City and County for visitors of all types. The CVC also operates the America’s Center convention complex and Edward Jones Dome.

Internships are available year round at the CVC. To learn more about the program contact the Human Resources department at 314-421-1023.
