Three high school juniors at Cardinal Ritter College Prep High School earned close to $2,000 in tuition scholarships. They are winners of an essay contest on stewardship, the Annual Catholic Appeal, and the Appeal’s theme this year “Do This in Memory of Me.”
Earl Johnson earned $750 after his essay placed first, Annyce Echols’s essay was awarded second place with a $500 prize, and Shamel Robinson’s essay ranked third with an award of $250.
The Annual Catholic Appeal is held each spring in nearly 200 parishes. Catholics make pledges to support programs that assist the homeless, the hungry, and families seeking an education for their children. Scholarships for students in Catholic schools, tuition grants, and support for Teachers’ salaries are provided through the Appeal. Resources for pro-life (or anti-choice) programs, assistance for women and their babies and family counseling are made available to people of all faiths.
Hill Brewing seeks veterans
Hill Brewing Company, Inc. in Ferguson is currently seeking qualified veterans for approximately 40 forecasted vacancies in the food service/wait staff field. Individuals hired to fill these vacancies will be employed at Hill Brewing Company’s new restaurant slated to open in mid-May.

Ray Hill, founder of Hill Brewing Co., is a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a native St. Louisan with a love for American craft brewed beers. His passion to create craft brews in his home guided him from home brewing as a hobby to launching his own commercially available brand of beer, Ray Hill’s American Pilsner.
Ray Hill’s journey to brewer/entrepreneur began in 1998 when he fell in love with craft-brewed beers during a business trip to Colorado. While a regional team leader with the U.S. Department of Interior, Ray Hill decided to create a brew in his kitchen, fermenting it in his basement. He perfected his recipe for Ray Hill’s American Pilsner, a full-bodied craft beer with a round, malty sweetness and a smooth finish. After offering samples of his beer at private social events throughout the Midwest, he slowly built a loyal following.
Hill came to the Veterans Business Resource Center (VRBC) and presented his business to the VBRC Board of Directors. They were so impressed with his passion and professionalism, they made phone calls and introduced him to several key players in the St. Louis community. This allowed him to begin a year of discussions with Anheuser-Busch brew masters and other executive.
Hill Craft Beer Company was formed through an innovative production and wholesale distribution agreement between Ray’s company, Hill Brewing Co., Inc., Anheuser-Busch, Inc. and its distribution network until the imminent buyout from InBev. In October 2008, Hill Brewing Company, Inc. became an independent company.
Ray Hill is now preparing to open his own craft brewing restaurant in Ferguson. It is scheduled to open in mid-May and will feature his signature Classic American Pilsner along with six other world beer styles and food.
