The St. Louis Gateway Classic Sports Foundation’s college scholarship applications are now available. Distributed to local high schools and available though the high school counselor’s office, the Gateway Classic scholarships are open to both male and females from St. Louis City, St. Louis County and East St. Louis high schools. The scholarships will be awarded to students who have achieved senior status with intentions of entering college in the fall of 2006.
“It is an absolute pleasure and privilege for the foundation to help young people with their higher academic pursuits. We want to help students who don’t normally receive scholarships; we want to help those with C+ averages,” Earl Wilson Jr., president and executive director of the St. Louis Gateway Classic Sports Foundation, said.
The Gateway Classic Scholarship is offered to students with a 2.5 cumulative GPA and requires this GPA to be maintained throughout the duration of the scholarship award. Since the St. Louis Gateway Classic Sports Foundation began awarding scholarships in 1998, it has invested more than $1.8 million toward this effort and has awarded more than 90 scholarships with 37 students graduating from historically black colleges and universities. A not-for-profit organization, the Gateway Classic has given back more than $6 million to the St. Louis area by way of scholarships, sports programs and other community-related events.
