Students of the culinary arts at St. Louis Job Corps should really get cooking now with a new $3.757 million Culinary Arts Training Center at St. Louis Job Corps’ 4333 Goodfellow Blvd. location.
McGrath & Associates, Inc., a St. Louis-based general contractor and construction manager, recently completed construction of the 16,000-square-foot building. In addition to featuring a fully equipped learning space for students replete with 10 cooking stations and a six-burner range, the building
features a cafeteria that accommodates up to 700 students and staff for three meals a day, seven days a week.
The St. Louis Job Corps Center is one of 118 Job Corps centers across the country managed by the U.S. Department of Labor. Its 18-acre campus is located just north of downtown. The center has more than 400 students, ages 16 through 24, who live on campus, and approximately 200 students who commute daily.
The culinary arts training program will prepare students for employment at restaurants.
To complete culinary arts training at the center, a student must master dozens of skills in the following categories:
• Prepare food for service occupations
• Safety and sanitation
• Practical utility operations, food preparation tools
• Clean, prepare, cut and store vegetables and fruits
• Prepare breakfast dishes
• Prepare salads and dressing
• Prepare sandwiches and frozen foods
• Prepare meats and fish
• Prepare pastas, dry legumes, other starches and sauces
• Prepare soups and appetizers
• Food management
• Breads and desserts
McGrath & Associates provided general contracting services
and Mak Architects was the project architect on the new facility.
“The project proved challenging, due to the removal of several abandoned underground structures and the installation of a water main, but work was completed three weeks early, within budget and with no lost-time
incidents,” said Ken Knobbe, president of McGrath & Associates.
“The facility turned out great, and we’re excited about the positive impact
it will have on the quality of life in the St. Louis community.”

St. Louis Regional Job Fair
St. Louis area job seekers are invited to participate in a regional job fair Tuesday, May 15 from 10 AM to 3 PM at the Machinist’s Hall at 12365 St. Charles Rock Road in Bridgeton.
The Missouri Career Centers, job fair sponsors, are recruiting over 55 companies to meet with job seekers from throughout the St. Louis region. Companies invited to attend have job openings in areas such as management, healthcare, manufacturing, customer service, hospitality, banking and clerical, just to name a few.
The St. Louis Regional Job Fair is open to the public at no cost. Attendees are required to dress professionally and bring resumes.
The Missouri Career Centers provide no-cost employment and training services to unemployed and underemployed job seekers. Career Center staff meets one-on-one with individuals to discuss career goals and provide them with job leads. Business Services Representatives work with companies assisting them in recruitment and other Human Resources functions, all at no charge.
