A recent $20,000 grant from Monsanto Fund helped KidSmart provide materials in support of math and science curriculum at Berkeley and Hancock Place middle schools in St. Louis County.
Representatives from Monsanto Fund and KidSmart provided each student at the schools with a backpack filled with paper (loose-leaf and graphing), a calculator, pencils, a ruler, a protractor and a compass.
“We are honored to partner with the Monsanto Fund to help ensure that children at Berkeley and Hancock have the basic tools for learning this year,” said Jennifer Miller, president of KidSmart.
KidSmart provides free school supplies to children in more than 100 St. Louis-area schools through KidSmart’s Free Store. Donations from individuals and organizations help keep the shelves stocked with essential school supplies, including pencils, pens, markers, crayons, glue, scissors and notebook paper.
A portion of the grant money will allow teachers from Berkley and Hancock Middle Schools to “shop” once a month at the KidSmart Free Store for additional supplies for the students in their classrooms.
“It’s wonderful to be able to provide St. Louis students with the essential school supplies necessary for them to excel academically in math and science,” said Deborah Patterson, president of the Monsanto Fund.
“We are proud to support KidSmart and its dedication to empowering children by supplying these basic tools at no charge to teachers and students.”
While it is important for schools to begin the academic year fully stocked with supplies, Miller points out that many schools and education-based charities receive a majority of their contributions at the beginning of the school year in August and September.
When the second semester of school begins, these schools and organizations are in desperate need of replenishing their stock of school supplies.
“Our inventory generally is much lower during this time of year in comparison with the beginning of the school year,” said Miller.
“Even though the holidays have concluded, we continue to encourage donations in order to equip teachers and students with the tools they will need for a successful completion of the school year.”
