Last Wednesday, Grammy Award-winning recording artist Nelly presented present Black and White Ball Scholarships to local high school students Jordan Powell and Leticia Goss.

Lindenwood University announced at Nelly’s Black and White Ball in St. Louis in 2008 that it would begin annually awarding two, four-year, full-tuition scholarships in partnership with the artist. Since then, Nelly has presented scholarship recipients with awards during special presentations at the university.

Scholarship applications were distributed to all high schools in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area in late 2011. The opportunity was open to all incoming first-year students who met Lindenwood admission requirements and demonstrated academic success, leadership and financial need.

Applicants also submitted a 200-to 300-word essay describing their personal goals and aspirations for college and their plans for applying their education and talents in the future.

Following a thorough review of all submitted applications, Powell and Goss were selected as 2012-13 award recipients by the Black and White Ball Scholarship Evaluation Committee.

Powell currently attends Elsberry High School in Elsberry, Mo., and plans to study broadcasting at Lindenwood. Smith attends Northwest High School in High Ridge, Mo., and plans to enroll in the university’s criminal justice program.

Accounting Career Awareness Program

ACAP (Accounting Career Awareness Program) is a week-long, all-expense paid, summer residency program focused on careers in business and accounting. Students will attend classes on accounting, business and college preparation. Classroom topics are enhanced through team building activities, professional office tours, and field trips.

The program is held at Harris Stowe State University from Sunday, July 22 to Friday, July 27. Thirty students will be selected based on 2.5 or better GPA, two letters of recommendation and high school transcript. Students (currently in 9th – 11th grade) from all across the Midwest and St. Louis metropolitan area are welcome to submit the required application, which can be obtained from the website or by contacting the executive director. The deadline to submit application is May 31.

“The ACAP program is geared towards grooming students for a successful future” says Brittani Lee, Executive Director and Financial Analyst at The Boeing Company. “ACAP has a long history of introducing high school students to the accounting and business profession, and we hope to continue this legacy through the 2nd Annual ACAP program in St. Louis.”

ACAP began in 1980 in Seattle, Washington and was created to provide minority high school students with early exposure to career opportunities within the business and accounting professions where they are underrepresented.

It is a program of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) Center for Advancement of Minority Accountants. The St. Louis chapter of NABA was established in 1972 to promote and develop the skills of its professional members, utilize their wide-ranging business skills to fulfill civic responsibilities, and to encourage and assist minority students in the accounting profession.
