The Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) has announced the creation of an office to support Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) pre-college learning for disadvantaged students.
Kathryn L. Kailikole will serve as COE’s Executive Director of STEM Development Programs and will coordinate STEM-focused collaborations that inspire and prepare disadvantaged students to pursue STEM fields. This new initiative is supported by a grant from the General Electric Foundation.
Kailikole joins COE from the University of California at San Diego, where she was assistant director of the campus learning center, coordinator of math and science tutoring and a Teaching Visitor in Mathematics. She has a B.A. in Applied Mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley, an M.A. in Education from the University of California at Santa Cruz, and is completing her Doctorate in Education at UC San Diego.
COE’s STEM Development Programs will initially support math/science learning within the pre-college TRIO programs serving disadvantaged students and within GE’s College Bound high school program in Louisville, Kentucky. Kailikole will be working in the areas of professional development training for teachers, curriculum development, and assistance in meeting state-specific STEM education standards.
