Special to The American

While school may be out for most area teachers and students, more than 20 Catholic grade school teachers and about 100 students went to school this summer – to help teachers learn to teach science more effectively.

The program is called the Summer Science Academy, and it provides an opportunity for students and teachers to build their knowledge of the physical and biological environment through hands on learning at science-related institutions throughout the St. Louis area.

The program helps teachers increase their knowledge of science content, apply the processes associated with inquiry-based instruction and assessment, and learn how to integrate science instruction into other subject areas.

First through third grade children have the opportunity to learn about a variety of science topics through personal experience and hands on investigations at the institutions like the St. Louis Zoo, the Missouri Botanical Garden, and the St. Louis Science Center.

The program is supported by a $425,000 grant from the Monsanto Fund, the philanthropic arm of the Monsanto Company, through the Today and Tomorrow Educational Foundation.

Today and Tomorrow Educational Foundation was established in 1990 by a group of local business leaders to raise money to provide resources to assist parochial and private schools in providing educational opportunities to disadvantaged families. Since its inception, TTEF has raised more than $25 million and provided scholarship assistance to nearly 3,500 students.

The evening will include a sampling of L’Ecole chefs’ signature dishes, wine and beverages, live music, and a silent auction. The event will take place on the campus of L’Ecole Culinaire at 9811 South Forty Drive in Ladue.

“Taste of L’Ecole” is open to students and the public, and tickets are $35 per guest. Reservations are required. All proceeds will go towards Vatterott’s scholarship foundation for local students. With locations in St. Louis and Memphis, students experience hands-on learning and career-based instruction with professionals in the culinary industry. Each campus has an on-site restaurant open to the public for dining that provides real-world kitchen experience for aspiring chefs. For more information, visit www.lecoleculinaire.com.
