Special to the American
The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) has received $15,000 from Monsanto Fund which will be used to provide scholarships to St. Louis-area high school students. UNCF is the nation’s oldest and most successful minority higher education assistance organization.
Michele Holton, Employment Branding & University Relations Lead for Monsanto Global Staffing, presented a $15,000 check on July 24 to John Armstrong Jr., area development director for UNCF, at Monsanto’s Creve Coeur campus.
Four UNCF scholarship recipients were also in attendance: Tangela Oatis of Ritenour High School, David Patin Jr. of Hazelwood Central High School, Ceairia Perry of Beaumont High School and Aaron Shepard of Saint Louis University High School.
“UNCF is pleased to team up with Monsanto Fund to increase undergraduate degree attainment for area minority students by reducing the financial barriers to college,” Armstrong said. “This grant will help local students pursue their college degrees at schools throughout the country.”
“We believe there is a strong link between education and people’s ability to positively affect the quality of their lives,” said Deborah Patterson, president, Monsanto Fund. “UNCF is working to help students improve their lives through education in situation where they may not have had the resources to do so.”
UNCF’s mission is to provide financial support to its 39 member institutions, increase minority degree attainment by reducing financial barriers to college, and serve as a national advocate for minority education. UNCF institutions and other historically black colleges and universities are highly effective, awarding 25 percent of African American baccalaureate degrees. UNCF administers more than 400 programs, including scholarship, internship and fellowship, mentoring, summer enrichment, and curriculum and faculty development programs. Today, UNCF supports more than 65,000 students at over 900 colleges and universities across the country. Learn more about UNCF at www.uncf.org.
