Building Futures, a design-build class for middle and high school urban youth, had the second class of its pilot program Saturday, June 16. This week’s class featured the use of saws, both hand saws and electric. Each student had the opportunity learn first hand the challenge of using a hand saw to cut a 2 x 4 and using a hand back saw in a miter box to cut a 45 deg. miter. They also used an electric chop saw to cut the same miter.
The class also had the good fortune to have Admo Ogun, AAIA, member of National Organization of Minority Architects, speak to them about sustainability. Each week a member of the community volunteers to speak to the class about a relevant topic.
Building Futures has added a Computerized Drawing Class to its summer program at Construction Careers Center. The design build class is on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The computerized drawing class is on Monday, 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Bus passes are available.
