In 2014 Commerce Bank launched “Mission: Hire,” a campaign focused on the hiring and retention of veterans and reservists who have or currently serve in one of the branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.
The purpose of “Mission: Hire” is to create a pathway for current and former service members to transition from military to a career in financial services. Commerce recognizes the leadership potential, skills and integrity of veterans as well as the unique strengths and perspective developed while serving our country.
“My military experience as an A-10 crew chief has helped me at Commerce Bank by valuing my Air Force Core Values,” said Frederick Brown, who formerly served in the U.S Air Force and is now a credit representative for Commerce Bank.
“’Integrity First’ by ensuring that all of my markets have the most current and valid data. ‘Service Before Self’ because I will ensure that my internal customers have all the information they need to present data to their clients. ‘Excellence’ in everything I do because I want to ensure that all the data I research and the information I present has been thoroughly analyzed.”
According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, there are approximately 22 million veterans in the U.S. With recent events, nearly one million of the country’s best and brightest are leaving the Armed Forces and joining the civilian workforce. With this in mind, Commerce Bank is focused on providing opportunities to veterans and reservists.
Commerce Bank participates in Hiring Our Heroes career fairs throughout the Midwest. Also, veterans can access the Armed Forces Skills Translator on the Commerce Bank careers site. The translator allows them to find out how the skills acquired in the Armed Forces translate into skills they can use in a career with Commerce Bank.
Recently, a Commerce manager received the Patriot Award. This award is given by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). An employee who is serving in the National Guard or Reserve can nominate individual supervisors for their support. The Patriot Award reflects the efforts made to support Citizen Warriors through a wide-range of measures including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families, and granting leaves of absence if needed.
