The Working Families Party, a national progressive political organization, announced its endorsement for Tishaura Jones for Mayor of St. Louis this morning (Tues., Feb. 28).
“Tishaura Jones is a smart and effective progressive leader,” said Dan Cantor, national director of the Working Families Party. “Around the country, we are seeing historic resistance to Trump. Now what we need are leaders like Tishaura Jones. Leaders who can enact policies rooted in justice – and that can put government to work for everyday people and bring shared prosperity to every community. That is how we will paint the path to a better future.”
The Working Families Party also pledged to embed a senior organizer in the campaign to assist with volunteer mobilization and get out the vote efforts.
“After 16 years, city residents and small businesses are ready for change: people over programs, fairness over favoritism, participation over patrimony” Tishaura Jones said. “Working Families Party is about fighting for a fair economy and a democracy that works for all of us. That’s what I’m fighting for too, and I couldn’t be prouder to have their support.”
The Working Families Party has helped elect numerous candidates to local office and fought for and won progressive policies from a higher minimum wage and paid sick days to more funding for public education to reforming policing practices.
“The Working Families Party is a growing progressive force for winning elections and winning change across America, and we couldn’t be more pleased to have their support here in St. Louis for Tishaura,” said Megan Green, a progressive St. Louis Alderwoman and supporter of the Working Families Party.
In 2015, the Working Families Party backed an effort in the municipal elections in Ferguson, Missouri to increase voter turnout and in support of candidates who favored policing reforms.
Since Election Day, the Working Families Party has been working to mobilize grassroots resistance to Trump with its #ResistTrumpTuesdays campaign. Tens of thousands of people have participated in more than 500 #ResistTrumpTuesdays protests at congressional offices.
