This Saturday, May 21 at St. Louis Riverfront Trail, a week of festivities celebrating the 150th anniversary of Mary Meachum’s role in the efforts to end slavery will come to an end.
Activities will include a reenactment of the 1855 event in which Meachum aided nine slaves in an attempt to gain their freedom. The banks of the Mississippi River will be packed with exhibits, speakers, historical exhibits and more as homage is paid to one of St. Louis’ stops on the Underground Railroad.
On May 21, 1855, Meachum, a free woman of color, allowed her home to be used as a starting point for several slaves on their journey to freedom. After being ambushed by the sheriff and slave owners, five were recaptured. Although most of the slaves, who belonged to prominent St. Louisans, were returned to slavery, their efforts and Meachum’s leadership continue to be recognized as an important contribution in the St. Louis abolitionist movement.
