On Monday night, audiences at the pageant will get a double dose of hip-hop soul as the Roots and Floetry take the stage.
The Roots began in 1987 when rapper Black Thought (Tariq Trotter) and drummer ?uestlove (Ahmir Khalib Thompson) became friends at the Philadelphia High School for Creative Performing Arts. The Roots’ first major-label album, Do You Want More?!!!??!, was released in January 1995 and was produced without any samples or previously recorded material. Tthey have redefined hip-hop and introduced it to new audiences.
Marsha Ambrosius and Natalie Stewart are ladies behind the neo-soul duo, Floetry. Ambrosius is the songstress to Stewart’s spoken-word artist. They came on to the music scene in the mid-nineties as songwriters and have written tracks for Michael Jackson, Jill Scott, Glenn Lewis and Bilal. They have recorded with Jeff Townes, aka DJ Jazzy Jeff. In 2002, they inked a deal with DreamWorks and touched up their own work for a debut album, Floetic.
