Two words for Flashdance – The Musical, showing at the Peabody until January 13.

DeQuina Moore.

Moore plays Kiki, a small-time club dancer who’s got a sassy step and a commanding, turn-men-to-stone voice. She’s a supporting character to Alex Owens (played by Emily Padgett), who is a club dancer by night and steelworker by day.

For those who remember Flashdance the 1980s movie hit, you know that the movie had that standard cheesy flare of the 80s. Yet, the movie also had quite a bit of sass and sexiness that makes it still stand up today. The musical undoubtedly had some great dancing and singing numbers by Padgett, other leading characters and the ensemble.

However, Moore single-handedly provided the edge and sass to a show that leans towards Disney’s Little Mermaid otherwise. Without Moore, the musical would have been a little too sweet to be sexy.

Moore rocked the house with her number “Manhunt,” where she flips, crawls, and even commands an ensemble of men in bondage dancing below the stage.

And what a voice. Music has been Moore’s passion since grade school, when she’d get in trouble for sneaking into the restroom during class to sing her heart out, she states on her website.

Moore has opened for various artists, such as Eric Benet and Destiny’s Child.  Her singing led her to landing lead roles on Broadway, in shows such as Legally Blonde The Musical and Little Shop of Horrors, sharing the stage with major stars such as N’Sync’s Joey Fatone.  She toured with Tyler Perry in Madea’s Big Happy Family, playing the ultimate gold-digger, Rose.

To Moore’s superfly presence in Flashdance: the Musical, we give two thumbs up! A phenomenal, sexy, show-stopping performance!
