Check this beautiful letter from Frankie Foy Appleby, a self-described “amateur opera-goer,” in response to my column last week:
Saturday, June 19, I attended ‘Romeo & Juliet’ – and I heard lots of applause for Juliet, especially after her first big solo. (Romeo and the Page got their applause, too!) I offer this alternative perception so people aren’t discouraged from attending Opera Theatre. All sorts of people come to hear the music – so try it!
When you come, attend the lecture an hour before. The rehearsal pianist tells you what to listen for, plays some themes, gives some funny stories about the musicians and composers. My sisters, friends and I save our money, pick one opera and go together. We may get fast food or sandwiches and picnic, then attend the lecture, and all sit together to discuss during intermission.
The director of our community orchestra got me interested – he said just listen for the beautiful melodies.
