On the cusp of the Fox hit show’s two-hour season finale, Empire’s soundtrack is opening at No. 1 for the week ending March 15 on the Billboard 200 album chart, according to Billboard.com.
The soundtrack topped superstar Madonna’s new album, Rebel Heart.
It marks the first time a TV soundtrack has opened at No. 1 since 2010, when three Glee albums premiered at the top, according to Billboard.
The ranking is based on “multi-metric consumption,” which considers alternatives, such as streaming, in addition to traditional album sales.
The show’s original music was supervised by renowned record producer Timbaland, and producer/songwriter Jim Beanz.
Original Soundtrack from Season 1 of Empire, as the album is known, includes such songs as What Is Love, Drip Drop, Whatever Makes You Happy and Conqueror.
