“Hidden Figures,” the film about unsung African-American female mathematicians at NASA starring Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monae and Octavia Spencer, has maintained its number one position after opening at the top of the box office for its nationwide opening last week.
The film, which also stars Mahershala Ali, Kevin Costner and Jim Parsons, actually bested its opening week numbers by nearly $5M by pulling in $26M during its sophomore week of nationwide release – and staving off animated film “Sing” and Golden Globes darling “La La Land.”
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “Monster Trucks” rounded out the top five for the Dr. Martin Luther King holiday weekend.
“Hidden Figures” debuted at number one last week with $22.8M and has earned more than $60M so far since its limited release on Christmas day.
