Former President Bill Clinton has donated a one-year supply of antiretroviral drugs to treat 2,500 HIV-infected children in Rwanda, with plans to double the number for those children currently receiving treatment in Kenya by the end of the year. The donation was made on behalf of the Clinton Foundation, a charitable organization spearheaded by the former president when he left the Oval Office in 2001. He launched the new program, dubbed the Rwandan Initiative, while visiting the Treatment and Research AIDS Center, the country’s national agency for the management and coordination of HIV/AIDS treatment and care. Clinton said he wants Rwanda, which he sees as a leading country in the combat against HIV/AIDS, to serve as a model for other African countries in combating the deadly disease. Over the past year, the number of people receiving antiretroviral drugs has nearly tripled, he noted.
