In a recent interview with Ms. Drama TV, media mogul Cathy Hughes discussed the need for her television network, TV One, to depict roles that offset what she believes is a trend in Hollywood.

“We are interested in the positive side of black people – black women in particular – in their true realism,” Hughes said. “When you have a Mo’Nique receiving an Academy Award for the worst portrayal of a black woman in the history of cinema, you realize how much it’s needed.”

Hughes says there is no shortage of inspiration for African American women to draw from with respect to roles to consider accepting – especially since the inauguration of President Barack Obama.

“Why would they not want to do movies and television about as positive, as powerful, as beautiful and brilliant as Michelle Obama?  Instead they want to portray lowlife no morals – just the scum of the earth.”

She goes on to say that the film Precious should have been burned and never should have been released in theatres.

Hughes also had a few choice words for Halle Berry’s Oscar-winning performance in Monster’s Ball.

“We’ve got two Academy Awards for showing black women in roles that are lower than dirt.”
