Chrisette Michele is breaking her silence on cancel culture.
TV host Jawn Murray requested that Michele be uncancelled after seeing the support Kanye West received for his Donda album— even though he publicly supported Donald Trump by endorsing him, rocked a MAGA hat and ran for president to try to divert the 2020 election.
Michele reshared Murray’s tweet and asked why her career hasn’t been elevated like her male peers after she sang at Trump’s inauguration.
“I always wonder how to respond to this question,” she wrote.
“It’s actually the reason I don’t do interviews anymore. Being compared to Kanye & Travis [Greene] for the last 5 years. Watching them soar into the highest realms of stardom. Waiting on God’s hand to show me exactly what my story will look like,” she added. “I’ve made a choice to stay full of gratitude and master peace, but today, this post has inspired me to allow the energy of comparison to enter my feed.”
“Would you release new music if you were me?” Michele asked. “What would you sing about? Who would you sing to? Why? What does my role as FEMALE play in this story?”
She questioned the role her gender plays in her getting canceled.

She sang at Trump’s inauguration in an effort to unite a country that was very much divided at the time. But many people, particularly Black people, stopped supporting her. Spike Lee axed her song “Black Girl Magic” from his Netflix series “She’s Gotta Have It” because he didn’t want to be “misrepresented.” Also, she received death threats, lost a record deal, and radio stations boycotted her music.
However, West has had continuous growth with his career in both music and fashion. Donda broke Spotify streaming records and is currently the biggest album debut of 2021. His Yeezy sneakers sell out fast during every release and his upcoming collaboration with Gap is estimated to generate millions in revenue.
