Verna Griffin, the mother of rapper/producer Dr. Dre, has her own story to tell and will share it in an upcoming memoir titled, “Long Road Outta Compton,” a play on the title of her son’s seminal album with NWA, “Straight Outta Compton.”

The book details Griffin’s transition from digging for coins in the sofa to living in a million-dollar home courtesy of her son’s rise to fame.

According to excerpts printed in the New York Daily News, Verna Griffin writes of being fifteen when she gave birth to Dre, whose real name is Andre Young.

Griffin also writes of always working full time and sewing the children’s clothes until Dre hit the jackpot with his recording career and gave her a house, as well as a regular allowance.

“I am rich,” she concludes, “but with a wonderful family.”
