Black entertainment news site Eurweb.com broke the story on Monday and the CW network has confirmed that the hit UPN turned CW show Girlfriends is no more. Eurweb.com said that a source supposedly within the “Girlfriends” writing camp told them. The network made the official announcement about the end of the series just hours after the Hollywood writers strike came to an end.
They decided to cancel the long-running sitcom “Girlfriends” and scrap production on the remaining 9 shows of its scheduled 22 this year. The CW is reportedly considering ways to give the show “a proper sendoff,” perhaps via a clip show.
Monday night’s two new episodes marked the end of the road for “Girlfriends.” Hours earlier, the CW told writers that the show would not return for a ninth season.
“Girlfriends” became the longest-running live-action comedy series currently on network television with the debut of its current season in October 2007. The series – which starred Tracee Ellis Ross, Golden Brooks, Persia White and Jill Marie Jones (who left in 2006) – was consistently the No. 1 show in black households since its Sept. 11, 2000 debut.
