News Channel 5 (KSDK) reporter Jeff small was recently promoted to weekend anchor at 5, 6 and 10 p.m. and will this Saturday, July 19.
Small got the news last Friday and said he’s very excited. “I think I paid my dues and it’s a chance to take my career to the next level,” Small said. Small, an Alton native, had been the main anchor at a small-market station in New Orleans before coming signing on to Channel 5 here about five years ago.
“I’ve been waiting ever since I came here, but it’s harder in a large market like St. Louis,” Small said. Small will continue general reporting during the week, but will be the lone news anchor on Saturdays.
The opportunity for Small came when former Saturday morning anchor Randy Jackson took a position Boeing recently, opening at slots. Cordell Witlock took Jackson’s morning anchor slot and Small was awarded Witlock’s. Small said its been a long time that two African American males held the two weekend anchor spots. Both he and Witlock won local Emmys last year. Small, 32, moved to St. Louis from Alton in his junior year, matriculating into Cardinal Ritter High. He first studied criminal justice at Jackson State University before studying broadcast journalism.
