With his best variety special win for “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards singer/songwriter/producer John Legend became the first African-American man to join the EGOT winner category. “EGOT” stands for the big four awards in the entertainment industry: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.
“Before tonight, only 12 people had won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony in competitive categories. Sirs Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice and I joined that group when we won an Emmy for our production of their legendary show Jesus Christ Superstar,” Legend said in a caption of him alongside Webber and Rice holding their Emmy Awards. “ So happy to be part of this team. So honored they trusted me to play Jesus Christ. So amazed to be in such rarefied air. #EGOT”
And at 39, Legend is also one of the youngest.
He is a ten-time Grammy Award winner. He and rapper Common won a Golden Globe and an Oscar for his song “Glory” from the Ava DuVernay film “Selma.” Legend earned a Tony Award as a producer of the Broadway production of August Wilson’s “Jitney.”
