We kiss, pucker, talk, laugh and smile – yet most of us do not consider that our lips need special treatment, too!

Lips are an essential part of a woman’s beauty. It is important for men to consider lip care as well. The skin of the lips is thinner than the facial skin, so taking gentle care of your lips is extremely important.

Over a period of time, your lips will lose their elasticity and wrinkles can develop. Since our face is more exposed to the weather than the rest of our body (excluding hands), it is also the area that will most likely show the first signs of aging.

Here are some tips on how to take care of our lips:

Moisturize your lips. Since our lips do not have hair or sweat glands, it is very important to moisturize them, especially before going to bed. Use a lip balm on a regular basis. If you only use them when your lips are chapped, it will take longer for the lips to heal. Use extra moisturizer during the winter months.

Drink lots of water to help hydrate your lips. DO NOT constantly lick your lips! This will dry them out and make them chappy. Your saliva will not moisturize your lips!

Choose lip balms that contain vegetable oils such as olive oils. These types of ingredients will help restore the natural oils in your lips. Color Me Beautiful’s Liplastic conditions and moisturizes your lips and can be worn under lipstick or alone. It’s great for men, too!

If you have problems with dry skin on your lips, Color Me Beautiful’s Lip Exfoliant helps to remove dry skin. Adriene Arpels’ Bio-Cellular Lip Line Crème, Gale Hayman’s Lip Lift helps to reduce fine lines around the mouth.

Avoid using lipsticks and lip products of cheap brands. Don’t use a heavy application of lipstick.

DO NOT share your lipstick or lip balms! This is a good way to catch meningitis or fever blisters. It would also be wise to share this information with young teenage girls who may share their lip gloss, etc., with their friends

DO NOT remove dead skin from your lips with your fingers! It is best to use a lip exfoliating scrub to gently remove dead skin

Some people have a problem with black lips. Having naturally dark-colored lips from birth is fine, but for people whose skin tones are lighter, there could be other reasons for having darker lips. Avoid overexposure of the sun and excessive drinking of tea or coffee. Smoking is the most common and most important reason for black lips. Also, allergies and dryness can contribute to this problem.

If you have a cold sore or any open sore on your lips, it’s wise to not use any lipstick during this time. There may be products in the lipstick that can aggravate the problem. Use medications designed to heal your lip problem, then return to your regular lip care once the lips are completely healed.
