Andre Braugher, one of the finest and most underrated actors to grace film and television, picked up a trophy for Lead Actor in a Mini Series or Movie for his role in the FX project ‘Thief.’ The Chicago-born thespian, who may be best known for his role on the police drama ‘Homicide: Life on the Street,’ beat out heavyweights Ben Kingsley, Jon Voight and Donald Sutherland for the Emmy — which is his second.
“Grey’s Anatomy,” one of television’s most popular shows and the creation of black writer Shonda Rhimes, was shockingly shut out even though it had 11 nominations.
Writes blogger Karu F. Daniels of AOL Black Voices, “By having the show (which is a ratings success) sweep the awards, it would validate that it is very much possible that a project helmed by a Black woman could actually work in the network system. And then the floodgates would open and every Thomasina, Willehmenia and Harpo will come to the party, thinking they are invited.”
