Michael Van Robinson in group show through March 23

Michael Van Robinson is a local African-American artist studying at the University of Missouri-St. Louis whose work is included in “Option D,” a group show of UMSL students hanging at the UMSL Galaxy, 1227 Washington in Downtown St. Louis.

“These images have all been generated on a Macintosh computer. They are an art movement I call architectural impressionism. They are not actual structures, but concepts I have conceived artistically. My attempt is not to design an actual structure but to provide an image that will inspire architectural thought,” Van Robinson writes in an artist’s statement.

“All art is the exploitation of beauty, and architectural impressionism is my attempt to exploit the beauty of fine architecture. My hope is not that these structures will come to reality, but that they will inspire those capable of architecture. The lay person can also appreciate this art form for its beauty, and its appeal is not prejudiced toward any race or gender.”

“Option D” runs through March 25 at the former Galaxy nightclub, 1227

Washington Ave. in St. Louis. The exhibit features artwork by 16

graduating seniors from the Department of Art and Art History at the

University of Missouri-St. Louis. Gallery hours are 2 to 8 p.m.

Saturdays. Call (314) 516-6967.

Note that this may be the last public event at the former Galaxy, as the building is scheduled for development into loft condos.

To contact the artist directly, call (636) 373-0402 or (314) 773-1278 or email marcella-robinson@sbcglobal.net.
