Black actors received nominations in five of the six categories dedicated to acting performances in film, and one movie, the much-hyped “Dreamgirls,” earned a nomination for Best Picture (Musical or Comedy). The nominations for the awards show, which also recognizes excellence in television, were announced yesterday morning.
Will Smith and Forrest Whitaker received best dramatic actor nominations for their roles in “The Pursuit of Happyness” and “The Last King of Scotland,” respectively. Actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, who shined in ensemble cast projects like “Inside Man” and “Four Brothers,” has now captured the attention of Hollywood and a supporting actor-musical/comedy nomination for his role in “Kinky Boots.”
Singer Beyonce Knowles received a lead actress-musical/comedy nod for her performance as Deanna Jones in “Dreamgirls.” Knowles’ co-stars Jennifer Hudson (best supporting actress) and Eddie Murphy (best supporting actor) could also bring the film its fair share of gold at the awards show.
