Denzel and Pauletta Washington, Taraji P. Henson

“A single name can define an artist who is a peer and equal of all the legends,” Hanks said. “And if ‘Washington’ doesn’t ring out loud enough, then let that first name carry all the weight: That name is ‘Denzel’,” said Tom Hanks as he presented Denzel Washington with the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award last night at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Hanks also called Washington “a peer and equal of all the greatest legends of our craft,” as he introduced his “Philadelphia” co-star for the coveted lifetime achievement award.

When he took to the stage with his wife and three of his children, Washington became only the third African American to be bestowed with the honor.

Coincidentally, a short time after Washington received the DeMille Award, Taraji P. Henson became the third African American woman to earn the Best Actress in a Drama award for her role as Cookie Lyon in Fox’s “Empire.”

“Who knew that playing an ex-convict who went to jail for selling crack would take me all around the globe?” Henson said. “I guess the world loves real.”

She handed out cookies on her way to the stage and seemed to channel her now Golden Globe winning character as she put a halt to being rushed from the stage during her acceptance speech.

“I waited 20 years for this. You gonna wait!”
