Local artist Kevin McCoy likes to keep it raw – and fresh.

Raw is the name of the new solo exhibit he has coming up at UMSL’s Gallery Visio, Aug. 28 through Sept. 19, with a party on opening night (next Thursday).

And Fresh Produce Goods is the name of his new T-Shirt company.

You might not a think a T-shirt company would have anything to do with an art show, but Kevin McCoy likes to mix it up like that.

He said his T-shirt company hand-screened “a very limited run” of CD covers to front “a custom mix of select sounds provided by DJ Needles.”

The CDs will be available at the opening – 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28 in the gallery, located at 170 Millennium Student Center on the campus of UMSL – and Needles will be spinning.

“I am an artist of many inspirations,” McCoy said.

“I often blend art, photography, graphic design, and various doodles to create unique art.”

His work in the Raw show does indeed sound like a unique blend – like one you could blend in a blender.

“With my upcoming solo exhibition at The University of Missouri-St. Louis, I will be combining a variety of printmaking techniques with other methods to produce art emblazoned on a majority of raw materials,” McCoy said.

Keeping it raw!

He said, “These pieces will showcase what happens when the soul of an artist clashes with the heart of a designer and eye of a photographer.”

Speaking of photography, he said his friend Phil Crawford “will be shooting at the event to capture the madness.”

This is, after all, the era of MySpace and YouTube, when you might as well document and exhibit yourself – everywhere, all the time, in every media available.

McCoy, an alumnus of UMSL, was a good enough boo to name-check and thank his wife.

“I have been working with my wife Danielle with every aspect of this show,” he said.

“She has been a huge help in putting this show together. She has done a lot of behind-the-scene duties to ensure this show is a success.”

This dude can keep it raw, fresh – and sweet.

If you can’t make it out to UMSL for the opening next Thursday, gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and the show is up until Sept. 19. More info at http://www.umsl.edu/~galvisio.
