Before you choose your skin care products, make sure you know what your skin type is. Some women have oily skin, some have dry but most have combination skin. When choosing facial skin products, make sure that it will work for your particular skin type.

Several factors contribute to the skin type that you have, such as diet, stress, weather, pregnancy, genetics, water consumption, etc. Buying the wrong products for your skin could increase the skin problems you already have.

It is very important to have a daily skin plan to help keep your skin looking its best. Your facial skin can either keep your age a secret or tell the world your age and add a few extra years.

Here are a few pointers to help you determine your skin type.

If your skin is OILY, your face will look shiny, especially in the T zone area. When you wear foundation, it wears off or seems to “melt” off of your face. Your foundation will seem to crease in certain areas like the forehead and around the mouth due to smiling, etc.

Most people with oily skin also have large pores. Also you may have acne problems such as whiteheads and/or blackheads, from your teen years all the way into your middle years. You may also have overgrown sebaceous hyperplasia or overgrown oil glands in your middle and late years. Your skin may also feel sticky to the touch.

If you have oily skin, there is basically nothing you can do to get rid of the oiliness for good.

If your skin is DRY, your skin may be sensitive to the weather such as sun, wind and cold. You probably never had a problem with acne. Your skin may feel tight or itchy, especially after washing your face with a cleanser. Also if your skin is dry, you may have rough, flaky skin or even have red patches in various areas.

If you have SENSITIVE skin, your skin may become irritated very easily and you may have negative reactions to certain cosmetic products. People who have sensitive skin also sun-burn very easily and may have blotchy or red skin. Also signs of broken capillaries beneath the surface of the skin could be a sign of sensitive skin.

If you have COMBINATION skin, your skin may be oily in some areas but dry in others. Some products help one section of your face but irritate the others. You may also have dry areas on your cheeks but oily in the T-zone area. The T-zone area is the area across the forehead, down the nose and to the chin. A person with combination skin would also be acne-prone in the T-zone area.

Now if your skin is considered NORMAL, you are one of the lucky ones who has even skin tone. Those with normal skin also have no problems using most products and less worry about skin irritations. Also your skin would be smooth and have few or no breakouts at all. The skin will look healthy with or without moisturizer. When you pull the skin away from the bony structure, it will spring back to its normal position.

Having normal skin does not mean you will never develop lines and wrinkles, however.
