Longtime World Wrestline Entertainment wrestling superstar “Macho Man” Randy Savage (real name Randy Poffo) passed away Friday in an auto accident. Savage was 58 years old.
“WWE is saddened to learn of the passing of one of the greatest Superstars of his time, Randy Poffo, aka Randy “Macho Man” Savage,” said the WWE in a written statement confirming the wrestler’s death.
Authorities have not reached an official cause for the accident, but speculation exists that the wrestler suffered a heart attack while driving, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and drive over the median before crashing into a tree.
His wife Lynn, a passenger in the vehicle, survived with minor injuries.
Savage reached the height of his popularity during the late 80s and early 90s, winning several championship belts in the WWF (now WWE) and WCW and popularizing the catch phrases “Oooooooooh Yeaaaaaaaaaaah!” and “Can you dig it?” Outside the ring, he also served as a longtime endorser of Slim Jim beef jerky snacks.
