Voices of the past that echo in the present are part of Tribute: Monologues from Black Heroes, the next theatrical presentation at St. Louis Community College at Forest Park.
Adapted from a book by Gus Edwards and directed by Carla Moody, STLCC-Forest Park theater professor, the reader’s theatre program will be presented Feb. 24, 25 and 26 at 8 p.m. and Feb. 27 at 3 p.m. the Mildred E. Bastian Center for the Performing Arts at STLCC-Forest Park, 5600 Oakland, St. Louis.
It is free and open to the public.
The words of Mahalia Jackson, Louis Armstrong, Coretta Scott King, Hattie McDaniel, James Baldwin, the Amistad rebels and Harriet Tubman will be used to illustrate their achievements in civil rights and the arts.
The cast includes Kevin Bailey, Kasaundra Reynolds, Asa-Hassein Millar, Siaglinda Fox-Jackson, Gregory Clark and Ruby Lacey.
Edwards, a playwright and professor at Arizona State University, included pieces by Malcolm X, Booker T. Washington, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, and others in his 2006 book, Black Heroes in Monologues.
